Product: BarrierGuard 800
Project: M23 damaged bridge parapet repair
Location: Area 4; M23, Southbound, MP 47-3, United Kingdom
Client: Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald
BarrierGuard 800 was used along the southbound carriageway of the M23 to protect a section of damaged bridge parapet that required repair. The damaged parapet section had been hit at least three times in recent years. In October, the bridge parapet was struck again by an errant vehicle and so BarrierGuard 800 was installed to ensure motorists could not come into contact with the section of damaged parapet. With BarrierGuard 800 in place, an impacting vehicle is simply redirected along the barrier’s length at a shallow angle in the same direction as the traffic flow. BarrierGuard 800 also provides protection to the road-workers behind the barrier from passing traffic as they repair the damaged parapet.
With the damaged parapet now protected, three lanes were left open to the traffic. However, on the 15th November, due to heavy congestion along this stretch of the M23, a multi-vehicle accident took place whereby two of the vehicles involved impacted the BarrierGuard. BarrierGuard 800 clearly demonstrated its life-saving properties as both vehicles were safety redirected. This meant the errant vehicles did not pass through the damaged bridge parapet as they were protected by the BarrierGuard.
Highway Care was on-site within hours of the incident to realign the barrier back into position. This was accomplished on site in less than 60 minutes as BarrierGuard 800 sustained only surface abrasions.
AFTER INCIDENT: BarrierGuard 800 out of position after a vehicle impact along the M23
HOURS LATER: BarrierGuard 800 realigned to provide positive protection to passing motorists along the M23
